چکیده

Numerous studies have been done in the past to identify the phases present in dental amalgam. Both metallographic and X-ray diffraction techniques have been used.-' Most researchers now presume that dental amalgam consists mainly of three phases. The original particle is an alloy of Ag, Sn, Cu, and sometimes Zn; the major portion is the compound Ag3Sn, which is often referred to as Py. After amalgamation, a portion of the original particle is left; in addition, an Ag2Hg3 (,yi) phase and a Sn-Hg (Y2) phase form. Schmitt' and Wing2 have described the Py and yi phases in the microstructure. However, the 72 phase has not been identified metallographically, except by pointing out voids where apparently a phase was present. Other phases have been proposed, but their existence has not been established. Although Cu may be present in the alloy in a proportion as high as 6 per cent, this element has not been identified in the structure. Wing2 and Crowell' both have postulated that a dark or gray etch-resistant area which appears in the alloy particles may be a Cu-Sn phase. Since the polishing methods which have been used in the past are not consistent, we developed a standard procedure for metallographic polishing which does not erode the 7Y2 areas. In addition, an etching solution was developed which reveals all the phases in amalgam without etching out the more reactive phases. After examination of various microstructures, a typical microstructure was defined. Then the three major phases were identified in the structure. Further work in this area will depend on a more positive identification of the phases and of the elements present.

Brittle fracture of dental amalgam.

The brittleness of dental amalgam limits its use to sites in which tensile stresses can be kept at a minimum. If the cause for the brittleness could be ascertained, then an approach to correct this problem could be devised. Physical properties of metals are ultimately manifested in, and can be explained by, their microstructure. Through the work of several researchers,1-3 means of identifying t...

Initiation of cracks in dental amalgam.

The force required to initiate cracks in dental amalgam beams was measured and related to the microstructure. The force measured was dependent on age and on the distribution of phases on the tension side of the beam. The Ag-Cu phase is most resistant to failure in Dispersalloy and an experimental alloy.

Microstructure of dental amalgams containing high and low copper contents.

Microstructure of commercial dental alloys and their amalgams were studied primarily by x-ray diffraction, optical metallography, scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction revealed more phases than normally reported in these materials. Presence of new phase was discussed and their formation mechanism understood. Some phases having interacting 2 th...

THE EFFECT OF ADDING TiO2 NANOPARTICLES ON DENTAL AMALGAM PROPERTIES

Abstract:In recent years, there have been many attempts to improve the properties of dental amalgam. The aim of the present investigation was fabrication and characterization of dental amalgams containing TiO2 nanoparticles and evaluation of their compressive strength, antibacterial and corrosion behavior. In this experimental research, TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) were added to reference amal...

Etching Techniques for Gold-Containing Ag3Sn Alloys and Amalgams*

Argon-ion etching and various other chemical etchants were applied to conventional and gold-containing dental alloys and amalgams. The polished and etched specimens were studied by optical and/or electron optical methods and by energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. Chemical etchants, though effective, have the disadvantage of accentuating surface scratches. This, in turn, causes difficulty in t...
